I am motivated to find images and the mark-making that expresses them best, in order to evoke emotional states which are not always easy to verbalize. Emotional states can be provoked and experienced through juxtaposing two or more images or types of materials that may not seem connected at first. My goal includes having the materials and the process symbolize the content. Through combining various papers, fabrics, objects and media in layered and overlapping ways, surfaces evolve onto which I then make marks, sand down, repaint and draw out or lay on images in various media or with new papers. This is done in small incremental stages, allowing for an articulated and intimate viewer experience and is a metaphor for the slowly revealed beauty and mystery of our emotional existence.
